# Calculation of brick,cement & sand in Brick masonry

Before starting learn these facts:

 SN Nature of work Type of mortar 1. Exposed and water logged areas Cement or lime mortar of 1:3 2. Damp proof courses and cement concrete roads Cement mortar of 1:2 3. For RCC works like staris, slab, pillar, lintels,etc. Cement mortar of 1:3, the concrete mix of 1:2:4 4. For internal and less important work. Lime cinder mortar of 1:3, cinder or ashes is used in place of sand. 5. For Fire Bricks 1:2 ratio of aluminous and crushed fine powder of fire bricks 6. For Parapet & Partition wall Cement mortar of 1:3 or Lime mortar of 1:1 7. Plastering work Cement mortar of 1:3 to 1:4 or lime mortar of 1:2 8. Pointing work Cement mortar of 1:1 to 1:2 9. Reinforced brickwork Cement mortar of 1:3 10. Stone masonry with best quality stones Lime mortar of 1:2, eminently hydraulic lime. 11. Stone masonry with simple or ordinary stones, bricks,etc Lime mortar of 1:2 or cement mortar of 1:6, eminently hydraulic lime. 12. For brickwork with thin joints Lime mortar of 1:3, fat lime is used.

### Assumptions Done

Standard Brick Size : 190mm * 90mm * 90 mm

Standard Brick volume without mortar = 0.19* 0.09 * 0.09 = 0.001539 cub.m

We assume 10 mm for thickness of mortar

Brick size with mortar : (190+10) mm * (90+10) mm * (90+10) mm

1). Brick calculation

take brick size = 200mmx100mmx100mm

convert in meter =0.2mx0.1mx0.1m

total volume of one brick with mortar = 0.2×0.1×0.1=0.002 cub.m

calculate the numbers of brick for 1cub.m = 1cub.m / 0.002cub. m = 500 numbers of bricks.

## MORTAR

Total volume of brick = 500 * 0.001539 = 0.7695 cub.m

Volume of Mortar Required = 1- 0.7695 = 0.2305 cub. m

cement : sand ratio = 1 : 5
sum = 1+5 = 6

Total Wet volume of mortar = 0.2305 cub.m

total dry mortar requried for 1 cub.m brick masonary= 0.30 cub. m ( Dry volume is 33% more than wet volume of mortar )

### 2). cement calculation

cement = ( 0.30 x 1 ) / 6 = 0.05 cum
convert in KG or mass = 0.05 x 1440 =72KG
convert in cement bag= 72/50 = 1.44bag.

### 3. sand calculation

sand = ( 0.30 x 5 ) / 6 = 0.25cum
convert in kg = 0.25 x 1440 = 360Kg.
