Self-healing concrete is a result that will organically produce limestone to cure cracks that come on the surface of concrete structures.  furthermore, micro-cracks sometimes cure themselves as many types of concrete characteristics a certain crack-healing capacity.


Bio concrete is dead concrete permeated with bacteria that arouse when cracks appear. Then, they produce limestone that fills the cracks in a week. The concrete lasts for 200 years and self-regulating if damage occurs on it.

When moisture invades the concrete through a crack, it opens up the seal, authorizes the bacteria to feed, germinate, and multiply, and in the process form limestone that full fills the cracks. Since bio-concrete only needs moisture to work, it’s applicable to heal underground structures in dams, basements. 

Different healing mechanisms are as follows: 

(1) Concrete has a self-induced healing capacity as un-hydrated cement is found in the substance. When water comes in touches the un-hydrated cement, further hydration process occurs. Moreover, mixed CO2 reacts with Ca2+ to produce CaCO3 crystals. These two mechanisms can only heal small cracks. To amplify the healing mechanism, micro-fibers are appended to the mixture. By mixing micro-fibers in the concrete, multiple cracks occur. So, not one wide crack, but smaller cracks are produced, which close more fastly due to autogenous healing.

(2) Superabsorbent polymers are capable to contain a huge amount of fluid (up to 500 times to its own weight) and to hold on it in their structure without mixing. When cracks occur, SAP is opened to a humidity environment and swell. This swelling reaction partly adhesive the crack from potentially harmful substances. After swelling, SAP particles take away and give the fluid to the surrounding for inside curing, further hydration and the precipitation of CaCO3. In this way, cracks are removed completely. 

 (3) Cracks can be cured by using CaCO3 to give rise to micro-organisms. These organisms are fixed in the concrete matrix after disabling on diatomaceous earth in microcephalic or in SAP and will get underway the precipitation of  CaCO3 once a crack produced. Through this process the bacterial will be overlaid with a layer of CaCO3, resulting in the crack padding.
